Another early SAC unit, the 7th Bombardment Wing was formed in November 1947 at Fort Worth AAF (later Carswell AFB) but was not activated until August 1948. As with many other SAC units, the 7th BW has operated a variety of types including the B-29 and B-36 before receiving the B-52 in 1957. The KC-135A tanker was assigned to the wing in 1958. The unit inactivated in 1993 with the B-52Hs transferring to the 2nd Wing. However, the wing reformed at Dyess AFB in October 1993, replacing the 96th BW. The two C-130H squadrons of the 463rd AW were added at the same time, becoming the 7th Wing in recognition of mixed role. The 7th Wing has the formal training unit for B-1B aircrew.
